Not long ago, homework was simple in one way: students had a question, a textbook, maybe a notebook, and sometimes a parent or teacher to ask for help. Today, things are different. A student can open an AI tool, type a question, and get an answer in seconds.

For many students, this feels useful and even exciting. If they do not understand a grammar rule, AI can explain it in simpler words. If they are stuck on a writing task, AI can give them ideas. If they want to check an essay, AI can suggest clearer sentences. In this way, AI can act like a study partner that is available at any time.

However, the problem starts when students stop thinking for themselves. There is a big difference between asking AI to explain a topic and asking it to complete the whole assignment. If a student copies an AI answer and gives it to the teacher as their own work, that is not learning. It is also unfair to other students who do the work themselves.

Some teachers are worried because AI makes cheating easier. In the past, teachers could often recognize copied work from websites. Now, AI can create a new answer every time. This makes it harder to know whether a student really understands the topic. Because of this, some schools have strict rules about AI.

But banning AI completely may not be the best solution. AI is already part of modern life, and students will probably use it at university and at work. Instead of pretending it does not exist, schools can teach students how to use it responsibly. For example, students can use AI to brainstorm ideas, ask for feedback, or practice difficult points. Then they should write the final answer in their own words.

Another important point is accuracy. AI does not always give correct information. Sometimes it sounds confident, but the answer is wrong or incomplete. This is why students should check important facts with reliable sources, such as textbooks, teachers, or trusted websites. AI can be helpful, but it should not be the only source of information.

Using AI for homework also changes the meaning of effort. Learning is not only about getting the right answer. It is about trying, making mistakes, improving, and building confidence. If AI removes all the difficult parts, students may finish homework faster, but they may not learn very much.

So, should students use AI for homework? The answer is yes, but with limits. AI can be a helpful tool when students use it to understand, practice, and improve. It becomes a problem when they use it to avoid thinking. The goal should not be to let AI do the homework. The goal should be to use AI in a way that helps students become better learners.
